ZINNOWITZ – Ski jumping on the beach in the middle summer? No, that's not vision of global warming, but a unique project realized by the spa town of Oberwiesenthal, which will present itself as a top winter sports destination on the beach of Zinnowitz from 22 to 24 July 2016.
Last held in 2004, four hoteliers and four local partners from Oberwiesenthal will bring the „Snow Magic“ of the Fichtelberg back to the beach promande of Zinnowitz. The highlight for sure is the K4 jumping hill of the Peter Riedel GmbH, where beach-goers can exchange their snorkel and bathing shoes against a ski helmet and ski shoes in order to try ski jumping themselves.
"To build the jump on a beach right in the height of summer, is not only a fun project, but a reference to the snow conditions of Oberwiesenthal in the winter“, sais Peter Riedel, explaining his commitment to the project. Together with four hoteliers (AHORN Hotel, Elldus Resort, Appartementhotel Jens Weissflog and Rathaushotels Oberwiesenthal) as well as the Fichtelberg Cable Car, the United Ski School of Oberwiesenthal and the Lift Association of Oberwiesenthal his company advertises the Fichtelberg region as snow-reliable winter sports destination. Thanks to the newly expanded snowmaking system the ski lift operation on Fichtelberg can be ensured from mid-December to late March.
"It is important to promote this fact given the mild winters in recent years. Especially since we do not only have great snow conditions, but also first-class winter sports competitions on the Fichtelberg", says Riedel.
For sports fans, the event in Zinnowitz already proves to be a real highlight, because ski jumping Olympic champion Jens Weissflog will return to the hill under the Zinnowitzer Ski Jumping Championship and compete against interested travelers and hobby jumpers for the Spa cup of Zinnowitz.
"We are excited to tackle this event with other regional companies. For us, this project is even more beautiful because combined with the Jens’ commitment our hill offers real added value and guarantees the summer guests an incomparable vacation experience," says Riedel.
